Magdalena Beukes is a third-year Politics History Economics Major at The King’s University, with a concentration in Politics and Economics. Like any typical PHE student, she would (slightly self-indulgently) tell you this is the most vital subject one can study to understand the world you inhabit. Politics and Economics are concerned with articulating value– quantified by votes or monetary exchange. During her time at King’s Magdalena has developed an interest in the ability of the Church to qualify social values with respect to the common good, disrupting narrower disciplinary assumptions regarding allegedly individualistic, rational, and utilitarian value calculations.
While attending King’s, Magdalena has participated in various initiatives inside and outside the university that have broadened her horizons regarding the importance of collective action and a robust sustainability discourse. This work has included advocating for sustainable employment programs as a member of the Edmonton Student Alliance and Youth Climate Corp, co-organizing the King’s Climate Hub, and attending conferences hosted by the Climate Emergency Unit. As a member of the CRC T2S Lab, she looks forward to delving deeper in her understanding of the conditions under which sustainability transitions can happen by contributing to the work of systematization of output from earlier research and furthering the conceptual-theoretical scaffolding of the lab’s current project.
